Bring Out the GMP: Hyundai Teases the Ioniq 5

Bring Out the GMP: Hyundai Teases the Ioniq 5

By Steve Thompson – Jan. 13, 2021

Hyundai Motor Company has teased us with numerous images – plus several videos – of its forthcoming Ioniq 5 EV. There truly was little unveiled that surprised – well, except for the fact that in some ways Hyundai wants to take on Rivian.

First, the design. Hyundai released several images of its first EV to ride on the company’s E-GMP platform: the Ioniq 5. Processing the images lighter than Hyundai ever intended reveals the teasers to be computer renders. Beyond that, the Ioniq 5 looks largely similar to the Hyundai 45 concept the company previously showcased.

Hyundai’s Ioniq 5’s hatchback design should offer ample luggage space and storage convenience.

Being a ground-up EV build on Hyundai’s new E-GMP platform, expect the Ioniq 5 to sport a frunk.

Hyundai’s design elements, the company states, “include Parametric Pixels, the smallest unit of digital imaging, as well as its eco-friendly Color Material Finish (CMF) direction that connects the analogue with digital emotions, showcasing the Ioniq’s brand’s timeless design value.”

In other words, Hyundai likes harsh lines and squares, as our adjusted images reveal. Previous teaser images of the Ioniq lineup showcase similar cube styling cues.

Past teaser images of Hyundai’s forthcoming Ioniq 5, 6, and 7 lineup showed the designs heavily leaning on squares.

We’re curious what the Ioniq 7 (right) SUV grille will look like in person when it’s revealed in 2024. The Ioniq 6 sedan (left) will be previewed in 2022.

While the Ioniq 5 is listed as a midsize crossover, according to a previous leak, expect the Ioniq 5 to resemble a mildly larger than normal hatchback – although these days, that’s splitting hairs. That same leak also revealed the Ioniq 5 will likely sport a 58 kWh battery, with a 73 kWh battery as a possibility. Expect just over 300 hp and a U.S.-rated range of roughly 250 miles.

A low five-second 0-60 mph time is expected, as is a speedy recharge rate courtesy of Hyundai’s E-GMP platform utilizing an 800-volt architecture. Thanks to that, the Ioniq 5 should be able to add 50-60 miles of range in about five minutes should an appropriate charger be found.

Accompanying the Ioniq 5 teaser images was a trio of videos promoting the Ioniq 5’s Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology, which boast 110- and 220-volt plugs and 3.5 kW of juice to power everything from – as Hyundai offers as examples – an oven to a speaker system to a treadmill, all while camping.

The camping angle is a fascinating choice because outdoors has been Rivian’s claimed domain for a while, with Rivian even going so far as to announce the company will build a series of EV charging stations at popular adventure destinations, like mountain bike, kayak, and mountain climbing spots.

The Ioniq 5 will be officially unveiled in February 2021.
