2022 Chevy Bolt, EUV – Incremental Yet Meaningful Updates
By Edward A. Sanchez – Feb. 14, 2021
Chevrolet finally revealed the updates to the 2022 Bolt and new Bolt EUV models, which were previewed at an invitation-only, no-cameras event in March 2020. While the refreshed Bolt and EUV are not based on the next-generation Ultium EV architecture, the updates are significant enough to be newsworthy.
When it was initially introduced in 2016 as a 2017 model, GM tried to position the Bolt as a “crossover.” Its unusual proportions made it seem more like a tall hatchback, and its somewhat homely styling has been a persistent criticism since its introduction. With the 2022 refresh, GM addresses this with a restyled front end for both the regular Bolt, as well as the new EUV model.
At first glance, the differences in EUV variant may seem so insignificant as to make you think “Why bother?” But the subtle differences may prove to be just enough for the EUV to be taken seriously as a legitimate crossover. Most significant is a 2.9-inch longer wheelbase, resulting in 3 inches of additional legroom. Overall length on the EUV is also 6.3 inches longer. Visually, the EUV casts a more convincing crossover silhouette than its slightly smaller sibling.
The tradeoff for the improved passenger space and more proportional styling is a slightly shorter EPA range of 250 miles compared to 259 for the “regular” Bolt. Both share a carryover 200 hp, 266 lb-ft electric motor and 65 kWh battery pack.
Probably the most significant update from a technical standpoint is the addition of the Super Cruise system, the first Chevrolet model to receive the hands-off Level 2 highway enhanced cruise control system. Models equipped with Super Cruise also receive a 3-year complimentary subscription to OnStar, which is required with the Super Cruise system.
Another significant breakthrough is the addition of a dual-voltage portable charger capable of 120V or 240V charging, as well as Chevrolet including home installation of a Level 2 charger in partnership with Qmerit for qualifying buyers or lessees, something we at The Watt Car have been advocating as a way to jump-start customer interest in and enthusiasm for EVs.
Pricing for the 2022 Bolt starts at $31,995, including destination, a decrease of $5,000 over the 2021 model. The EUV starts at $33,995. GM notes these prices are before applicable state, local, or federal tax credits. A Launch Edition of the Bolt EUV, including Super Cruise, sunroof, unique wheels, special badging, and an illuminated charge port is available for $43,495, and can be pre-ordered at Chevrolet.com.
While not an entirely all-new model or platform, the Bolt EUV represents a significant stylistic update that will likely appeal to potential buyers who may not have considered the Bolt before. The lower starting price is an additional enticement that will likely get the attention of shoppers. The EUV could very well become the only Bolt, as the more appealing styling and proportions, plus greater passenger comfort, could prove to be the magic formula for success that the first iteration of the Bolt came close to, but just missed.
The 2022 Bolt and Bolt EUV will go on sale starting Summer 2021.
